Introduction of Dr. Maie St John by Prof. Dr. A. Afifi

Maie St. John was born as Maie Tantawy in Madison, WI, while her Egyptian parents were graduate students at the University of Wisconsin. After they finished their studies, the family moved to Texas where they stayed until 1978. At that time, they saw the light and came to LA where they have been ever since.

Maie vividly recalls her childhood visits to Egypt – annual trips that shaped her calling as a doctor and scientist. Her grandfather, the Chief doctor in Zagazig, would take her on house calls through the dusty streets of that bustling town.

In 1992, Maie got her Bachelor of Science with honors in Biology from Stanford University, and received several awards of distinction. Her GPA was 3.99. I don’t know what mean professor took away that 0.01 from her perfect GPA. In all seriousness, this is no small achievement at Stanford. In 1999 she got her MD and PhD in cell biology from Yale Univ. She then came back to LA as a resident at the UCLA School of Medicine. Again, Maie received all sorts of honors and awards at Yale and at UCLA.

During her surgical residency at UCLA, she was recognized for both her surgical and research prowess. After finishing her residency in 2005, she was invited to join the UCLA Geffen School of Medicine faculty, where she is now an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Head & Neck Surgery.

The process of cancer metastasis, that is the spread of tumors from one organ to another, has emerged as Dr. St. John’s primary research interest. She and her colleagues are working to better understand a molecule called E-cadherin, which is the “glue” that keeps cells stuck together. In a recent interview, Dr. St. John said: “We are focusing our work on understanding what controls the presence of E-cadherin, so we can come up with ways to prevent tumors from breaking apart and spreading. Studying E-cadherin will allow us to gain a better understanding of how cancer spreads. This will then enable us to increase the survival of patients with head and neck cancer.”

Maie is married to Attorney Richard St. John, and has two young boys: Zane and Jude. Her husband, Rick, says that, through her research, she is in the business of putting herself out of business. But Maie says that if that happens in her lifetime, she would be thrilled. Maie also says that her boys can pursue whatever career path they choose, but she does want them to learn compassion, and hopes that her boys will have a desire to help people, just as she does.
